Discrimination can be of various kinds and in many different situations. Patronizing a fellow team member, because they have a different background and might not be up to the challenge can be discrimination. In a student team, all members have the same right to participate and should be included equally. You should not be biased against people who you are less familiar to you.
If you feel left out of your group or team, talk to the other members, most of the time the behavior is not intentional and can be resolved when pointing it out. If this does not solve the problem, contact the project advisor or team coach and try to find a solution together.
It is always challenging, when you are working with a new team, especially if the final grade is based on the team effort. The notion that your own performance can affect someone’s grade arguably puts you under more stress, compared to when you are working alone.
In this situation, to have someone doubt your skills, can be very hurtful, and in the worst case can affect your self-esteem and induce anxiety. These doubting comments are especially hard to ignore if they are phrased in a nice way, since you get the feeling that people do not mean to offend you. In some cases, this niceness is only pretend and the person indeed means to hurt your feelings. But sometimes they can just saying things without thinking. The first category can be potentially open to dialog and you could point out to them that their opinion of you may be biased, but remember to stay civil.
It is very unfortunate that sometimes this happens, but don’t let it tear you down, and remember, you don’t have to deal with it alone.
